Many organizations assign the Chief Legal Officer (CLO) title to the individual who oversees the legal matters of the organization. This title is used by companies that (i) have a global footprint, (ii) would like to highlight the strategic role of the individual in this function, and (iii) would like to demonstrate that this function is part of the group of chief officers who report to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). However, not all companies whose General Counsel (GC) provide strategic advice and report directly to the CEO have changed the title to CLO. This article exams the trends and nuances behind these titles.
