ACC Europe will address cross-border data protection and the challenges of conducting business in emerging markets at the 2016 ACC Europe Annual Conference on 22 – 24 May in Rome.

ROME (9 May 2016) — The Association of Corporate Counsel Europe (ACC Europe), which serves the needs of more than 2,200 in-house lawyers practicing in corporations and other organisations throughout Europe, will address changing regulations, compliance issues, cross-border data protection and the challenges of conducting business in emerging markets at the 2016 ACC Europe Annual Conference on 22 – 24 May in Rome.

With more than 300 corporate counsel from over 20 countries in attendance, ACC Europe will host the largest meeting for in-house lawyers in the region. The programme will feature more than 20 sessions, including such topics as:

  • The Evolution of the European Project: Legal Implications of a ‘Brexit’ or ‘Grexit’ Use of Behavioral Economics by EU Legislators and Regulators
  • Equality, Diversity and Discrimination in the EU Workplace
  • Financial Education for In-house Lawyers
  • Succeeding in Emerging Markets
  • EU Data Protection Regulation

In-house lawyers from such companies as Anheuser-Busch InBev SA, Google Inc., European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Mondelēz International, Snam, Swiss Reinsurance Investment Management Company Ltd, Telecom Italia, and Unilever, among others, will share insights on a wide variety of legal issues, including how expectations of legal teams have changed over the last decade.

“Our goal for the 2016 ACC Europe Annual Conference is to balance our discussion of legal updates and techniques with a focus on the leadership qualities they don’t teach in law school,” explained Mercedes Carmona Mariscal, president of the ACC Europe board of directors and managing counsel of West Europe for BP. “We have brought together some of the world’s most innovative law departments to share their experiences and best practices on topics in-house counsel feel are important, from succeeding in emerging markets to the importance of strategic planning and protecting trade secrets.”

According to the ACC Chief Legal Officers (CLO) 2016 Survey, CLOs in Europe were more likely to seek to develop finance skills among lawyers in their department as compared to CLOs in other regions. “Know your Financials - Financial Education for In-house Lawyers” is one of many sessions on business and soft skills at the conference.

“As today’s global business market becomes more complex, we as general counsel play a larger role in decisions that shape a company’s future,” Sabine Chalmers, ACC board chair and chief legal & corporate affairs officer at Anheuser-Busch InBev. “I am looking forward to discussing ways to address these legal and business complexities and connect with colleagues from around the world at the Rome meeting.”

Additional programmes will address crisis management, financial education and legal challenges related to social media. The conference will feature two interactive sessions, one on enforcing intellectual property rights in China and another on the outside counsel selection process.
