ACC will host a new advanced-level educational program, the ACC Mid-Year Meeting, in New York on April 10-12.

WASHINGTON (March 2, 2016) — The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC), a global legal association representing more than 40,000 in-house counsel in 85 countries, will host a new advanced-level educational program, the ACC Mid-Year Meeting, in New York on April 10-12. The conference features interactive sessions on corporate governance, financial industry compliance and contracting as well as a plenary session on cybersecurity. At the conference, Freakonomics co-author Stephen Dubner will give a keynote speech on employee incentives and ACC will present the first-ever ACC Advocacy Award.

The ACC Mid-Year Meeting will feature advanced-level content for lawyers with at least three years of in-house experience. Sessions fall into three tracks:

  • Corporate Governance and Board Service Best Practices – including topics such as shareholder activism, executive compensation and subsidiary management.
  • Financial Industry Compliance and Data Management – including topics such as the regulatory landscape, international data privacy laws and impacts of big data.
  • Contracting Skills and Strategies – including topics such as enhancing risk management, managing an international portfolio and an advanced negotiating technique live exercise.

The conference brings together faculty from organizations including Microsoft Corporation, the Federal Trade Commission, Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Bank of America, Marriott International and American Express.

Tuesday morning will open with a plenary session, "Worst Case Scenario – The State of Cybersecurity and Lessons Learned," on topics from the ACC Foundation: The State of Cybersecurity Report. Released in December, the report found that one-third of in-house lawyers have experienced a data breach at their current or a previous company. The plenary will offer actionable takeaways from the report as well as guidance on preserving privilege, deciding how to allocate budget and collaborating with law enforcement or government agencies.

"Midtown Manhattan is the world's largest central business district, and thousands of multinational companies have a presence in the city. The ACC Mid-Year Meeting provides a prime opportunity for in-house counsel from these and other companies to gather to discuss the regulatory landscape, corporate governance and other issues affecting their daily practice," said Veta T. Richardson, ACC president and CEO.

Stephen Dubner, co-author of the Freakonomics series, will provide a keynote speech on "the unpredictable nature of incentives" – what works for employees, what does not and why, on Monday, April 11. The keynote will also more broadly address "workforce science," what makes a company a happy or unhappy place to work.

ACC will present the first-ever ACC Advocacy Award, which recognizes an individual, chapter or committee that has engaged in successful advocacy on behalf of the in-house bar, on Tuesday, April 12.
