WASHINGTON (October 23, 2017) — The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC), a global legal association representing more than 43,000 in-house counsel in 85 countries, announced today key initiatives of its Strategic Plan 2.0, a roadmap for the organization's success over the next five years.

Building upon the foundations laid under Strategic Plan 1.0, the FY2018-2022 plan marks new opportunities to serve the in-house counsel community worldwide and return value to ACC members. It encompasses setting standards for education, accreditation, and benchmarking; elevating the practice of in-house law and unique role of the head of legal function; and continued global expansion, with a deeper focus on Europe and the Asia Pacific region.

"Chief legal officers and general counsel are under increased pressure to demonstrate to their companies how the law department delivers value, and ACC is in a position to provide the support and resources they need to thrive," said Veta T. Richardson, president and CEO of ACC. "With input from members of every demographic group and region in ACC's membership base, this strategic planning process has spotlighted exciting opportunities to remain our members' most valued professional resource."

The ACC Strategic Plan 2.0 revolves around four themes designed to maximize member value, including:

  • Transform ACC products and services to offer members a more targeted and personalized experience based on their unique context.
  • Bolster ACC's efforts to enable productive connections, collaboration, and engagement between members with similar interests.
  • Be the network of choice for in-house counsel worldwide by providing all members a first-rate, customer experience regardless of their location.
  • Shape the environment in which members operate, so their contributions and counsel are highly valued and sought by their key stakeholders.

"These four strategic themes operate as decision-making guideposts to clarify how ACC will continuously enhance the value it brings to members through the right mix of services worldwide," said Bill Mordan, chair of the ACC global board of directors, and general counsel and company secretary at Shire plc. "I am eager to work alongside other ACC leaders to spearhead efforts that will advance our members' ability to better support their corporate clients."

To advance these four themes, ACC's implementation plans entail:

  • Customizing ACC products and services based on career stages, practice settings, and professional development needs.
  • Developing best-in-class online training platforms to deliver legal and business education.
  • Engaging a wider sector of members, particularly Millennials, to serve as thought leaders in the legal and business communities.
  • Raising ACC brand awareness through creation of relationships with a select group of strategic allies.
  • Driving conversations on the future of legal services in order to advocate for the interests of in-house counsel and their clients.
  • Publishing definitive performance metrics and raising standards for the in-house legal profession.
  • Promoting a "Seat at the Table" initiative to educate the broader legal and business communities to tap the full potential of the general counsel role.
