HRH The Prince of Wales, long an advocate for a global response to threats from climate change, addressed more than 80 general counsel and chief legal officers at the Association of Corporate Counsel's Global General Counsel Summit via a video recording. Noting the rise in climate change litigation and investor activism, His Royal Highness told the audience that general counsel play an important part in managing the risks associated with climate change and helping companies demonstrate that they are seriously working towards mitigating climate impact.
Indeed, ACC's own research shows that general counsel and chief legal officers more often than not have influence over their company's sustainability plan. With sustainability becoming a central issue to a company's reputation and risk profile, the involvement of the general counsel is essential in this area and something that boards of directors and investors should expect from companies.
Fast-evolving risk and regulatory developments relating to climate change are just one of the many reasons that general counsel must have a seat at the table.
