ACC AustraliaThe overlap between tax and disputes is complex and can create tensions within organisations that are not prepared for them. Julian and Muhunthan will chart a course through this broad topic.
They will explore:
- The perennially contentious topic of when to bring in the lawyers (both internal and external);
- The equally contentious topic of whether to go to litigation;
- Avoiding, mitigating and navigating reviews, audits and ultimately litigation;
- Current ATO programs and focus areas, and an overview of State and Territory focus areas; and
- Some of the ATO’s areas of sensitivity so that you do not inadvertently poke the bear where it is sore!

Julian Cheng, Partner, Gilbert + Tobin
Julian is a Partner in Gilbert + Tobin’s Tax group.
Julian has over 25 years’ experience in providing tax advisory services. He advises on mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructures, cross border investments and financing, fund structuring, and also assists with tax controversy matters.
Julian joined Gilbert+ Tobin in 2020. His previous roles include 9 years as a tax partner with a Big 4 chartered accounting firm, which involved 2 years as head of the firm’s Australian tax desk in New York providing Australian tax assistance and advice to US corporate groups and funds.
Muhunthan Kanagaratnam, Partner, Gilbert + Tobin
Muhunthan heads Gilbert + Tobin’s Tax practice.
Muhunthan has more than 25 years of experience in advising clients across a wide range of industries. He helps clients manage tax-related litigation, audits and reviews, respond to compulsory production notices and asset freezing orders from the revenue authorities, and reach favourable settlements in tax disputes. He also advises extensively on a wide variety of complex or novel tax issues and assists clients engaged in mergers and acquisitions.
